Information About Living in Puna

One of the largest districts in Hawaii, Puna’s 320,000 acres of land is almost equivalent to the land area of Oahu. Located on the eastside of Hawaii and sharing borders with Hilo to the north and Kau to the west, Puna is also home to over 32,000 residents. Characterized by gentle slops, Puna’s landscape is formed of lava and soils from the Mauna Loa and Kilauea eruptions. A relatively new portion of land, Puna is placed upon an extensive network of lava tubes that pass under much of the district. Residents of Puna real estate homes or condominiums for sale fall in love with the area’s flowing lava fields, unblocked views, and fresh air in addition to the wide-open fields and room for expansion.

A portion of Puna is also part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Other local attractions and activities include Kalapana Church in Nanawale, Cape Kumukahi Lighthouse, Pahoa Village, the Lava Flow at Kalapana, Kehena Beach, Volcano Art Center, Pohoiki Beach and surf spot, Lava Tree Park, Champagne Ponds, and the east side lighthouse. Puna also features several international restaurants and is the home of Hawaii's oldest theater. Although there isn’t an extensive selection of shops and retailers in Puna, the nearby city of Hilo offers a big variety of entertainment and restaurants.
