Information About Living on Maui
The island of Maui is the second largest island in the state and has a population of almost 120,000 residents. However, the nearby islands of Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe are also included in the Maui County. The four islands, together, once formed a single island, Maui Nui, 200,000 years ago. Named according to an Ancient Hawaiian legend, the island is nicknamed the “Valley Isle” for its large, fertile isthmus that joins the two major volcanoes, Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains. Residents are well served by both the Kahului International Airport, with flights to the U.S. Mainland, and Kapalua Airport.
Because Maui offers good weather and plentiful land, it is able to produce many premium exports such as coffee, macadamia nuts, papaya, tropical flowers, sugar and fresh pineapple. The island also thrives on a blossoming tourism and visitor industry. Additionally, the Maui Research and Technology Center and Haleakala Observatory provide valuable resources to the island. Real estate homes and condominiums for sale on Maui provide residents with a unique blend of rustic island living and contemporary resources, shopping, and steady work.
Area landmarks and attractions include Haleakala National Park, the Road to Hana, Honolua Bay, Lahaina Town, Sugar Cane Train, Iao Needle, Bailey House Museum, and the Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center. An extensive range of other activities, including snorkeling at Molokini, surfing on the north shore, and biking on Haleakala provide wonderful opportunities in addition to a numerous amount of recreational facilities located throughout the island, offering organized sports as well as places to waste away leisure time.
