Aloha! Inclusive of the world’s most isolated pieces of land, the state of Hawaii is located in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, spread across a collection of islands over 1,500 miles in length. Originally inhabited by travelers from the South Pacific, the arrival of British Captain James Cook in the 18th century brought news of Hawaii to the world. However, the islands continued rule by feuding kings who battled for control of the island chain. Eventually Hawaii was ruled by a monarchy before being admitted to the United States in 1959. Hawaii became the nation’s 50th state and has since grown to a population of almost 1.3 million residents. The state’s main islands include Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, Lanai, Hawaii, and the only unpopulated one, Kahoolawe. The state’s serene beaches, majestic valleys, enormous mountains, and diverse landscape make Hawaii one of the most beautiful places on earth. Interestingly, Hawaii is the only state of the United States that has a royal palace, does not have a straight line in its state boundary, and continuously grows in area, due to the flow of the Kilauea Volcano. With Hawaii’s natural beauty, a multitude of national parks that attract thousands of residents and visitors alike have been created within the state, including Haleakala National Park, Hawaii Volcanoes National Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, and the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.
