Information About the Hawaiian Islands

Aloha! Inclusive of the world’s most isolated pieces of land, the state of Hawaii is located in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, spread across a collection of islands over 1,500 miles in length. Originally inhabited by travelers from the South Pacific, the arrival of British Captain James Cook in the 18th century brought news of Hawaii to the world. However, the islands continued rule by feuding kings who battled for control of the island chain. Eventually Hawaii was ruled by a monarchy before being admitted to the United States in 1959. Hawaii became the nation’s 50th state and has since grown to a population of almost 1.3 million residents. The state’s main islands include Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, Lanai, Hawaii, and the only unpopulated one, Kahoolawe. The state’s serene beaches, majestic valleys, enormous mountains, and diverse landscape make Hawaii one of the most beautiful places on earth. With an equally beautiful culture and rich heritage, Hawaii real estate homes and condominiums for sale include must more than just the property itself!

The isolation of the Hawaiian Islands in the middle and range of environments has resulted in a vast array of endemic flora and fauna. Additionally, Hawaii’s range of temperatures is so diverse that during the winter months, the peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island encounter snow while the shores of the same island experience 80-degree temperatures! Real estate homes for sale and condominium properties for sale offer new residents the typical island spirit and beautiful surroundings and communities. Residents are able to find work locally in a variety of fields, with Oahu as the capital being the largest and most diverse workplace. Hawaii’s major food exports include coffee, macadamia nuts, pineapple, livestock, and sugarcane. Transportation between the islands is made easy via hundreds of daily interisland flights in addition to the recently added Superferry.

The state is unique in that it shares a common public education system. Although this is the most popular means of education in Hawaii, the state is also home to three of the largest independent schools in the nation. For higher education, the University of Hawaii’s 11 campuses are supplemented locally by Brigham Young University Hawaii, Chaminade University, and Hawaii Pacific University.

Interestingly, Hawaii is the only state of the United States that has a royal palace, does not have a straight line in its state boundary, and continuously grows in area, due to the flow of the Kilauea Volcano. With Hawaii’s natural beauty, a multitude of national parks that attract thousands of residents and visitors alike have been created within the state, including Haleakala National Park, Hawaii Volcanoes National Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, and the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.
