Cascading streams and waterfalls are the trademarks of the Hamakua Coast on the northern side of the Big Island. Filled with fertile valleys and lush gulches, the view from the highway offers spellbinding views of the sparkling Pacific Ocean worthy of at least a couple dozen pictures. From the turn of the twentieth century, many small towns and villages sprang up along with a variety of sugar and crop plantations that benefited from the large quantities of rain. Notable towns in Hamakua include Honokaa and Laupahoehoe, both of which have splendid parks, recreational activities, beautiful vistas, and campgrounds.
