Information About Living in Hanalei

As the setting of Disney movie “Lilo Stitch” and the inspiration for South Pacific, the 500-person town of Hanalei is a peaceful small town of contrasts. Despite the new-age artists and wide-eyed tourists, Hanalei also has generational farmers and laid-back locals. It’s not uncommon for movie stars and other celebrities to frequent Hanalei. Residents of real estate condominiums or houses for sale appreciate the area’s relaxed atmosphere, mix of old and new, as well as the relatively upscale neighborhoods along the beachfront.

Hanalei features some of Hawaii’s most breathtaking beaches. Lumahai Beach has been featured in dozens of movies and television shows. Hanalei Bay is surrounded by a magnificent range of mountains and offers premium and uncluttered surfing in the winter and secluded swimming, fishing, and canoe racing in the other seasons. Hanalei Town is lined by a unique collection of quaint shops and galleries in addition to a couple well-known retailers. Building on Hanalei’s feeling of old Hawaii, the majority of taro raised in Hawaii is still produced in Hanalei that makes the town the state’s largest provider of poi.

Hanalei hosts the annual Haena to Hanalei 8 Mile Run/Walk as well as Tahiti Fete festival. Other attractions in Hanalei include Limahuli Gardens, Hanalei Taro Farm, Waioli Mission House, Hula Temple, and the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge. Additionally, Hanalei Valley Lookout provides a breathtaking view of the Hanalei Valley that is quite inspirational.
