Information About Living in Wailuku

Nestled jest outside of Kahului on the north shore of Maui at the mouth of the Iao Valley, over 12,000 residents call Wailuku home. With a variety of residential, industrial, and tourist areas, Wailuku offers a variety of attractions and activities to keep people occupied year-round. Residents of real estate homes or condominiums for sale find that the ever-changing Downtown Wailuku is a diamond in the rough. In the downtown area is Market Street, lines with interesting galleries, shops, eateries, and museums. Still in the days of old Hawaii, the street hasn’t modernized yet, adding a special feel and unique charm to the Wailuku area.

Area attractions include the Bailey House and Kaahumanu Church in addition to the historical Hawaiian temples, Halekii Heiau and Pihanakalani Heiau. Furthermore, the Iao Theater has gone through every change in the island's recent history from local kung fu movie palace to hippie foreign film haven and is now home to a local performing theater group. The nearby Maui Tropical Plantation gives residents and visitors a narrated tram ride as well as a well-stocked gift shop which features Wailuku’s treasured exports: sugar cane, pineapples, coffee, macadamia nuts, avocadoes, star fruit, and papayas.

For the outdoorsy inhabitants of Wailuku, the city offers a range of activities starting with sunning, tanning, and frolicking in the tides off of Waiehu Beach Park. In the calmer months, snorkeling and kayaking are favorite pastimes of the beachgoers. Golfers will find that the Waiehu Municipal Course and Waikupu Golf and Country Club both provide excellent services and courses. Wailuku is also home to the island’s daily newspaper, The Maui News.
